If approved by the Board of Regents, how will diploma requirements change for high school students?

Under the proposed timeline:

  • Diploma assessment requirements would sunset in the Fall of 2027.  Students graduating beginning January 2028 and after would not be required to pass Regents exams to graduate high school.  Students will still be assessed in accordance with their district's local assessment strategy.  They may still take Regents exams to demonstrate learning and apply towards seals or endorsements.
  • New York State would move to one diploma in the Fall of 2027.  Beginning in 2028, all students who meet state graduation requirements will graduate with a NYS High School diploma.  Students will still be able to earn seals and endorsements.  Advanced Designation will be available as a seal or endorsement.  
  • Full implementation of the new, competency-based graduation system aligned with the New York State Portrait of a Graduate would begin for students entering high school in Fall of 2029.

Please Note: The Board of Regents must approve any changes to the New York State graduation requirements.

Until such time, the existing requirements remain in effect for all students.

Volunteer Tuition Reimbursement Program
 

Volunteer fire departments and EMS agencies in Rockland County, which rely entirely on volunteers, respond to thousands of emergencies each year. These agencies face a critical need to recruit and retain members. To help, the county has introduced a recruitment and retention program offering college tuition reimbursement to volunteers. Volunteers who meet service requirements in a local fire department or EMS agency and maintain a GPA of 2.0 or higher are eligible for reimbursement. The H.E.R.R.O. program, managed by the Office of Fire and Emergency Services, offers up to $3,000 per semester (max $6,000 annually). Applicants must be active members for at least one year and maintain required activity levels.
