Academic Honesty
Academic Honesty
As a student of the IB Diploma program of Clarkstown High School South, you are expected to maintain the highest standards of academic integrity. All IB Diploma students are required to exhibit behavior consistent with the school/district code of conduct. Severe violations may lead to exit from the program.
The Clarkstown Central School District Conduct and Discipline Policy prohibits the following forms of academic misconduct:
- Plagiarism
- Cheating
- Copying
- Altering records
- Assisting another student in any of the above actions
International Baccalaureate policy statements on malpractice are as follows:
- Where malpractice is proven, a grade of “N” is awarded and no further registration by the candidate is allowed.
- If malpractice, collusion or plagiarism is suspected in external or internally assessed components of the examination, IBCA must be contacted immediately.
Academic Dishonesty and Plagiarism Guidelines
Clarkstown High School South
After reviewing the types of plagiarism and the academic dishonesty guidelines with you teacher, please review with your parent(s)/guardian(s) and sign the second page of this document
Academic integrity is a cornerstone of character, scholarship, and leadership. Students will assume responsibility for their own work at all times, and their individual contribution to group work as assigned by their teacher.
In order to highlight the importance and rationale for the policy, students and parents will receive a copy of the Academic Integrity Policy at the start of each academic year. They will be required to read and sign the policy agreement. The agreement will be collected and kept on file.
Academic dishonesty, including plagiarism, is strictly prohibited and will be dealt with most severely when found.
The following are examples of violations of academic honesty:
- Submitting another person’s work as one’s own, and/or failing to use proper documentation and works cited;
- Using any unapproved, outside materials (i.e. graphing calculator, study aids, notes, books, copies of quizzes, tests, or answer keys, etc.) during assessments*;
- Communication of any kind during any assessment including, but not limited to: talking, signing/gesturing, and any form of phone usage;
- Obtaining/accepting assessment1 information and transmitting it to members of another class period;
- Copying and/or permitting another student to copy or complete another student’s assessment*; f. Falsely claiming illness or failing to attend class to avoid the date on which an assessment* is due;
- Using an online translator for writing assignments, projects, and/or oral presentations; (use of a dictionary to look up isolated words is permitted);
- Unlawful copying of computer software or data created by others;
- Willful giving or receiving of unauthorized aid that is unfair or dishonest and gives an unscrupulous advantage in school work over other students
First Infraction: The first time a student is caught violating the academic integrity guidelines or plagiarizing, he/she will receive a zero for the assignment. The parent(s) or guardian(s) will be notified. The student will be required to complete the plagiarism education assignment, and he/she will have the opportunity to complete the assignment in question properly within one week for a maximum of half credit.
Second Infraction: The second time a student is caught violating the academic integrity guidelines or plagiarizing, he/she will receive a zero for the assignment with no opportunity to complete the assignment properly. The parent(s) or guardian(s) will be notified. The student will be required to again complete the plagiarism education assignment. He/she will also be subject to school discipline as per the discipline guidelines for that school year.
Any Further Infractions: Other penalties may be assigned at the discretion of the school administration.
1 Assessments include, but are not limited to tests, quizzes, homework, papers, projects, laboratory reports, and take-home tests.
The information above is from “Academic Integrity Guidelines” in CHSS Student Handbook.
